By Leila Monteiro Lins
IN THE SHADOW OF THE HILL is a timely and relevant feature length documentary that serves compelling evidence as to the extent of crime and corruption in modern day Brazil. Helmed by first-time director Daniel Jackson, the film puts the spotlight on the spirit of solidarity and resilience of the residents of Rocinha, Brazil’s largest favela – where one man’s disappearance galvanizes an inspiring movement to rally against the ruthless state oppression.
David versus Goliath story is inspired by the disappearance of Amarildo, a brick layer and father of 6 who became the face of the fight against government corruption and police violence in Brazil. The protest mounted by his family and favela spread across Brazil and led to an international outcry, coinciding with one of the largest civil uprisings in Brazilian history. Ten members of the military police were eventually charged and convicted of the torture and murder of Amarildo.
Utilizing inquisitive, roving camerawork interspersed with candid personal accounts – Jackson explores the many shocking transgressions that link Rio’s elite police battalion to the suspicious disappearances and human rights abuses, in a flawed political system that criminalizes poverty.
Director/Producer Dan Jackson is a linguist, writer and classical guitarist. He honed his directorial and cinematography skills in the Australian TV commercial industry before moving onto long form work. IN THE SHADOW OF THE HILL is his feature documentary debut.
