About the films
Opening Night: Rosa Morena
September 29th – 7pm – TIFF Bell Lightbox (350 King Street West) – $15
Directed by Carlos Augusto de Oliveira, with Anders W. Berthelsen, Barbara Garcia, Vivianne Pasmanter, and David Dencik
In his forties, Thomas desperately wants to be a father. But as a single gay man in Denmark, he cannot legally adopt a child. So, he decides to visit an old friend in Brazil, where there is a thriving black market for adoption. Maria is beautiful, charming and pregnant, yet she is too poor to support her unborn child. The plan is simple – Thomas will pay Maria and bring her baby back to Denmark as his own. However, things get unhinged when Thomas becomes emotionally involved with the enchanting Maria. Touching on a myriad social issues, Rosa Morena is also a story of affection. Provocative, entertaining and poignant, it resonates through the heartbreaking and heart-warming tale of two people trying to do the right thing for the child they both love.
Pre-Brafftv: Estomago – A Gastronomic Story
September 22nd – 6pm – at the Palmerston Library (560 Palmerston Ave., in the Annex) – FREE MOVIE SCREENING
Directed by Marcos Jorge with João Miguel, Fabiula Nascimento and Babu Santana
Estômago – A Gastronomic Story is the story of the rise and fall of Raimundo Nonato, a cook with very special talents. It deals with two universal themes: food and power. But more specifically, food as means of acquiring power. It can be defined as “grown-up fable of power, sex and cooking.” Estômago was the big winner in its world premiere at the 2007 Rio Film Festival, receiving four awards: Best Film (Audience Choice), Best Director, Best Actor and the Jury’s Special Award. In its European premiere at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, it won the Lions Award and the audience’s second choice out of 200 films. In Berlin’s 2008 festival, the film screening offered a special dinner, inspired by dishes prepared in the film. In Uruguay at the Punta del Este International Festival, Estômago took the awards for Best Film and Special Mention for Best Actor.
