Khajuraho, ancient Khajjurwaha is situated in the Chattarpur district of Madhya Pradesh. A thousand years ago, it flourished under the patronage of Chandela princes, who were great builders and connoisseurs of arts and letters. They lived, loved, fought and triumphed here and once acquiring the zenith of their power built temples to their gods with all the religious fervor of a virile race. There are many unanswered enigma’s regarding the myths and mysteries of these temples. Why were they build? Why so many of them were built? As dusk falls over the temples at Khajuraho, the stillness is suddenly pierced by the sound of ghungroos and the staccato beat of the tabla. This unique and exciting event attracts people form all over the world, who come to witness and be a part of continuous seven day extravaganza of classical dance in which the most accomplished artistes of the country juxtaposes with the ancient temple background and leaves the audience spell bound. |

temples. Let the stones answer these queries as nothing else can clear
those doubts so eloquently. The carvings depict griffins, nymphs, human
emotions, fear, doubt, jealousy, ardent love and consummate passion
and when clubbed up together presents the finest expressions of art
and architecture of medieval India. As one takes glance at the temples,
the first impression is of soaring masses of stone culminating in the
intricately carved details of the sculptures and fringes seen to grow
out of the temples itself. This perfect fusion of sculptures with architectures
represents Indian temples at its zenith. |
